Antique French Louis XV Pierre Nogaret Chair

Antique Louis XV Nogaret Chair

Antique Chair with footboard by Pierre Nogaret,

around 1760
Dimensions : 95.5 H x 51.5 W x 46 D cm

An example of simplicity and virtuosity, this antique Louis XV Nogaret chair by the master from Lyons, Pierre Nogaret, displays a confident and original talent. The design of the back is rare in having three elegantlycurved rails ornamented with a double moulding in the continuation of the stiles. These rails lend a semi-cabriole shape which makes the chair more comfortable. The gently sinuous H-form footboard, which links the base of the legs, skilfully balances the graceful structural design. A smooth, carvingfree moulding is finished at the far ends of the legs by snail volutes.

PIERRE NOGARET (1718-1771) - The main leader of the Lyons production so sought-after nowadays, he was probably of Parisian origin. A master in 1745, he perhaps drew inspiration from Parisian masters such as Tillard and Cresson and from furniture of the Piedmont. But in his own style he was able to break free from the influences to create models of a generous opulence while at the same time rigorous and balanced.

Footboard : term describing a strut, particularly in the form of an H, which links the legs of a chair. It in no way indicates that it belongs to the Regency style, as is all too often remarked.

Antique French Caned Couch (Sofa) Louis XVI Style

Antique Louis XVI Caned Couch

Circa 1775.

Dimensions : 90 H x 175 W x 68 D cm.
Original : Château de l’Isle-Marie, Normandie.

An unavoidable charm is apparent in this double-Caned Couch sofa that presents to the layman a virtuosity of line and uncommon sculpture.

Several original points emerge from amongst the detailing : the crossbar in cradle, the armrests that come back as if lightly imprisoning the user, the delicacy of the backs and sides, the ornate feet of twisted fluting.

One can notice how the style of ornamentation and form probably refers to the early period of Louis XVI style, around 1775, that is customary to call « greek style ».

Antique Louis XVI Fireside Armchair and Footrest

Circa 1780.

Dimensions :
Antique Armchair = 94.5 h x 81 w x 67 d cm
Antique Footrest = 42.5 H x 81 W x 64 D cm.

Original : Antiquarian in Normandy.

This remarkable Parisian Antique fireside armchair makes a low and munificent seat, having the look of a bergere with unupholstered sides. Derived from a “chauffeuse” (low chair), which had to be lower than the king’s chair, it is a luxurious and uncommonly comfortable seat. One will notice the important slant of the back, the slope of the turned back legs, the curve of the armrests and the important size of this aristocratic Antique armchair.

With its refined bead carving, acanthus leaves, rais de coeur coupled with ribbon, it can be attributed to Jean-Baptiste Sené or his brother but it could altogether have come out of the workshop of J-B Boulard or one of the Jacobs, all appointed by the king.

Antique French Pedestal Table Regency Style

Antique Regency Pedestal Table

dimensions : 67 H x 31,5 W x 29 D cm.

Small French Regency pedestal table with three legs ending in shoes. The special shape harks back to the animal style of Ancient Greek mythology, portraying fauns or the Galatea goat. The symmetrical decoration is inspired by figures in vogue in the first thirty years or so of the 18th century. It is used a great deal when on its creation this light piece of furniture was intended to carry candelabra and girandoles.

Antique Pedestal table : in the beginning the pedestal table was shaped as a Moor, a slave carrying a tray. The central trunk was then embellished with a tripod and various models of it were available. The candelabra may also be confused with pedestal tables depending on the artists.

Antique French Corner Cupboards Louis XV Style

Antique French Corner Cupboards

This antique french corner cupboards Attributed to Jean-Pierre Latz, furniture worker; with floral marquetry by Jean-François Oeben, furniture worker

French, Paris, about 1750 - 1755 Louis XV Style period

Oak veneered with amaranth, maple, walnut, mahogany, sycamore, satinwood, tulipwood; gilt bronze mounts; brèche d'Alep stone top

72.DA.39

An ébéniste used various brilliantly colored exotic woods and stained native woods to create the floral marquetry on the doors of these corner cupboards. Ébénistes specializing in this type of work, such as Jean-François Oeben, sometimes sold such panels already made and ready to be glued onto a piece of furniture.

Oeben used the grain of the wood to create the effect of movement in a leaf or a petal. Tulips, carnations, roses, lilies, and daffodils are recognizable in his naturalistic bouquets. Elaborate gilt bronze mounts of interlaced flowers and branches, designed by a specialized sculptor and made by a bronze caster, set off the marquetry panels.
